01 / CACHING

Reuse what you already have.

A clear cache policy saves repeat downloads and makes returning visits faster.

02 / PAYLOADS

Make every byte count.

Choose sensible image sizes, reduce unused assets and keep the first page simple.

03 / MEASUREMENT

Measure the whole journey.

Look beyond a single latency number. Test the experience on slower connections too.

Field notes

Start with a cache policy

Static files with versioned names can be cached for longer periods. HTML often needs a shorter policy so changes reach visitors promptly. Use validators such as ETag or Last-Modified when a resource should be rechecked instead of downloaded again.

Keep private responses out of shared caches. Test an update in a fresh session and in a session that has already loaded the site.

Keep the first load small

Resize images to the dimensions at which they are displayed and provide responsive sources when needed. Reserve image dimensions to reduce layout shifts. Load below-the-fold images lazily, while allowing important above-the-fold content to arrive early.

A static document with a small stylesheet is often enough for a useful informational page. Add scripts only when they serve a clear interaction.

Test more than the happy path

Compare first and repeat visits, test a sustained download, and look for failures across several attempts. A quick response to one small request does not describe every part of a connection.

Record where and when a measurement was taken. Results vary by network, device and the amount of work a page asks a browser to do.
